Independent ownership is worth building for
The Cypress Team
Owning a business gives people a stake in the results of their work and agency in their day-to-day lives. Ownership also means being responsible for everything.
We are building Cypress to lower the cognitive cost of ownership.
The work an owner loves sits within an endless stream of tasks that cannot be ignored: setting a staff schedule for next week, following up with a supplier, noticing that margins have slipped, renewing a license. These tasks consume valuable time and attention.
We believe that capable management can and should be affordable and present in every company. Effective planning, deft coordination, and consistent follow-through belong in a four-person shop as much as they do in a large corporation.
We are building intelligent systems that manage the facts, figures and particulars that otherwise fall between people and systems. In doing so, these systems keep jobs to be done moving in the background.
Cypress works autonomously to understand a business: the numbers, relationships, constraints, and the owner's reasons for doing things the way they do.
This understanding must survive across conversations, improve through experience, and remain useful when circumstances change.
Building a system with that level of attunement and intentionality and consistency is the category-defining technical challenge at Cypress Labs.
We believe that growth, community, income, craftsmanship, and more time with family are all legitimate ambitions. Cypress acts on an owner’s intent. We make tradeoffs visible, and leave owners in control of the data and knowledge accumulated on their behalf.
Our ambition is to build systems that reason about what makes a business special: its personality, where it sits in a market, the forces that act on it, the decisions of taste that have nonlinear effects.
We seek to understand what customers want and what owners are trying to achieve. This is design: taking massive streams of data, turning them into predictive knowledge of the world, and helping owners build businesses that are genuinely distinct.
When we succeed, owners and the communities they serve will be radically better off. One owner will get an evening back. Another will open a second location or start a new business. Someone who would otherwise decide that ownership asks too much of them will choose to begin.
That matters beyond any one person, family, or company. A more dynamic economy grows the pie and gives more people more surface area to build, own, and choose. New entrants create variety and give incumbents a reason to improve. We find profound delight in making ownership easier to attempt and harder to kill through administrative exhaustion.
The productivity gains promised by near-term superintelligence must not remain concentrated among the largest technology companies. We believe rapid and broad diffusion of superintelligence into the broad base of the economy is critical to support the fiscal and monetary underpinnings of our abundant way of life.
We want a world with more vibrant communities populated by independent businesses and owners who shape them. More places with character, run by people who care deeply about what they make and the people they serve.
Businesses that might otherwise fail for preventable reasons will have a chance to thrive. Opportunities that seem impossible today will become commonplace.
